Betty Rockford
In the 1970's, I became involved with a federally funded program sposored by Stron's Pediatric department. At that time, support groups for families of chronically ill children did not exist. I was assigned to the Pediatric Hematology oncology Unit. My role was one of support for familes and children diagnosed with cancer and other blood disorders. My title was Family Counselor, now renamed Parent Advocate. This position became an intricate part of CURE Childhood Cancer
Association, formed thirty years ago by families and hospital staff. As the federal funding expired, I moved on, spending eighteen years as a Monroe county casworker. I remained however, a dedicated CURE board member.

When at age six our grandson was diagnosed with a brain tumor, I came to appreciate even more fully CURE's capabilities. our grandson, now eighteen, is living proof of the true meaning of CURE, a never to be forgotten organization.
