July 2025 Newsletter

Once upon a time, a group of Parents each lost a Child to Pediatric Cancer. They were faced with many challenges but worked together to form C.U.R.E. with the hope of helping future Families who also receive that devastating diagnosis.

Life is not a fairy tale, but fairy tales pose challenges to the characters involved and the Village comes together to try to help overcome the challenges. C.U.R.E.’s mission is to provide loving support to local Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Families. We aim to be the Village of support that wraps our arms around our Families to help them through their challenges.

Every Family’s story is different. C.U.R.E. travels alongside our Families through their unique stories to help wherever we can.

Our theme for 2025 is Fairytales!

C.U.R.E. 2nd Quarter Update…

The second quarter of 2025 has been another challenging one for the C.U.R.E. Family. Our organization has been introduced to 21 new Families and 1 additional Family has experienced a relapse. On average, we add between 45 - 50 new Kids to our C.U.R.E. Family annually and at this point halfway through 2025, we have added a total of 43 new Families and 4 relapses.
YOUR SUPPORT MEANS MORE NOW THAN EVER!

In addition to the support we provided shown to the right, C.U.R.E. also:

- Celebrated 3 End of Chemo Bell Ringings
- Hosted 3 Parents’ Night Out opportunities
- Distributed toys, games and gifts to 24 Kiddos
- Celebrated 86 Survivors at our Annual Survivors’ Day Picnic
- Distributed over 500 Voyage Beads to C.U.R.E. Kids and Sibs
- Our Parent Advocates made over 450 visits to Families in the hospital
- Honored 8 Angels by laying their Bricks in our Julie Roberts Children’s Memorial Garden Brick Walkway

And so much more!
We are able to lovingly wrap our arms around our Families because of the kindnesses YOU all keep sharing with C.U.R.E. Thank you for letting local Families know they are not alone in their battles.

Welcome new Board Members!

Welcome, Rob DeRider!

Welcome, Sam Meloni!

Michelle’s Corner: Survivorship

June 1st is celebrated as National cancer survivor’s day and that was the day of our annual cancer survivors' picnic! Elena and I have been talking about survivorship this past month and reflecting on different emotions and feelings we have as parents, so I thought I would share my experience and tell you why this day means so much to me and my family. During my son’s first year in treatment, we attended our 1st survivor's day picnic. I remember feeling so happy to see him running around with other kids, kids who had no hair like him, who were in and out of the hospital like he was, and he was just having fun, he was 3 years old. The children’s hospital was different years ago and it was hard to connect with other parents unless you saw them while getting treatment, so it was so nice for me to meet other families there. Getting to talk to other parents who had kids go through the same treatment Geovanni was getting years ago and see them there, doing so well was such a relief and just made me feel like we can do this too. It was a day we looked forward to each year to see what fun things were going to be there and who we would see!

Now working here and being at the picnic I feel just as happy to see all the families I have been able to meet come together and celebrate! I love to catch up year after year and see what everyone is up to and to see the kids there just diagnosed getting to have fun and the families connecting reminds me of our experience. Geovanni comes to volunteer now and says he has so many memories of having fun at the picnic and really loves to see all the kids having a fun day without thinking about their diagnosis. It really is a day to lift each other up, meet people who get what you are going through, and watch your kids have fun. For me it is just a happy day to not feel that guilt that my son is a survivor, to not have to think about all the things these kids had to go through, or still will the next week, a day to just say today we are celebrating!

Congratulations to Four Winds Chimney: 2025 C.U.R.E. Dedicated Community Partner!

Every year we like to acknowledge a friend of C.U.R.E.’s that is making an impact in the community around them. Without these partners and their kindness, C.U.R.E. would not be able to exist in the capacity that we do.

The Four Winds Chimney Team not only believes in the work we do but wholeheartedly believes in the people who work at our organization. They stand along with us, advocate with us, and invest in us, especially when it is needed the most. Over the past several years, Anthony and his team have continued to grow their support and have become one of our biggest cheerleaders. If we ever ask for a favor, like a video for social media for example, they won’t hesitate to help and ask, “what else do you need?”.

We are so grateful for their continuous support and kindness and choosing to support our Families. C.U.R.E. is honored to award Four Winds Chimney with the 2025 Dedicated Community Partner Award!

Congratulations, Rylie, Lucia & Delaney!

Please join us in congratulating our Friends Rylie and Delaney! Rylie joined us in the office with her mom to ring the End of Chemo Bell and celebrate survivorship. We were delighted to celebrate Rylie with gifts and her favorite snacks: BBQ Pringles and Sour Skittles!

Lucia and her mom came to our office to celebrate finishing treatment in May. Lucia, in her special Elsa dress, was so excited to ring the bell. Her handprint has been added to our Handprints of Hope wall. We celebrated Lucia with her favorite treats: Doritos and Pretzels! Lucia got to bring home a whole collection of Disney Princess Dolls to play with.

Delany joined us with her mom, dad and big brother. We were thrilled that they came by the office to add her handprint to our Handprints of Hope Wall and to ring the End of Chemo Bell. Delaney was treated to a Paw Patrol bag full of puzzles and games and Lego trucks (her favorite!). Her snack of choice was Nutrigrain bars and Pirate’s Booty! Big Brother Hudson selected a Paw Patrol toy to take home as well because he was such a brave big brother when his sister was undergoing treatment.

Spotlight on: Alanna

Meet our Friend, Alanna.

Three fun facts about Alanna:
* She has a wonderful, infectious and bubbly
personality that makes her loved by everyone
* She is her big brother’s side-kick. They can be found
together all the time doing their favorite things like
riding four wheelers, fishing, camping and swimming.
* She spends lots of her time painting, playing with her
dolls and kitchen, but most of all she adores her
animals. She has a lab named Delilha (who never
leaves her side), chickens, a rabbit, horses, pigs and
a show cow named Lucky! No matter how she is
feeling, her love of animals will always help her
through the day.

While at the hospital, Alannah loves to play in the playrooms. She looks forward to them every time she has to stay. She adores playing hide-and-seek with the nurses and doctors. Time always seems to fly by when she is in the hospital. On treatment days, she loves to visit with the staff and bring in small treats as a special thank you. Alanna becomes their entertainment for the day, which makes everyone smile!

Alanna was diagnosed with B Cell Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A.L.L.) around Christmastime in 2024.

Survivors’ Day Picnic 2025

On Sunday, June 1st, 2025 over 85 Families attended C.U.R.E.’s Annual Survivors’ Day Picnic. It was a cool, windy, sometimes rainy day, but that did not stop the smiles and laughter all around. We are so grateful that C.U.R.E. Families were able to spend the afternoon thinking only about having fun! We could not do this without our wonderful volunteers and community partners.

Thank you to all of the following: ASP Industries, Ahrens Benefits Co., Arlene’s Costumes, Black Bird Design, Brighton Securities, Catching Dreams Charters, CURE Bears for Hope & Love, Democrat & Chronicle/LocaliQ, Enchanted Princess Parties of Rochester, Four Winds Chimney, Grease Paint Alley Clowns, HypeBooth, Inga Mucha Photography, MicGinny’s on the River, Molly V’s Homemade Ice Cream, Monroe County Parks, Monroe County Parks, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Patrol, Pirate Toy Fund, R.P. The site also has resources and advice relating to employment and applying for these scholarships.

Some opportunities require commitment to a childhood cancer advocacy project while in college, while others make you eligible for you just being you.  But you do need to apply! Be sure to read the instructions and qualifications very carefully. Apply in plenty of time to get feedback from family, guidance counselors and others.

In memory of Ian Mech…

We are so humbled to be included in honoring what would have been Ian’s 12th Birthday. Every year, the Mech Family hosts a toy drive in memory of their sweet Ian and donates the items to various organizations throughout the Community. C.U.R.E. was blown away by the kindness of all those who loved Ian and received over 155 stuffed animals and Squishmallows that will bring so much joy to our C.U.R.E. Kids and Sibs. Thank you for letting us be a part of remembering Ian. We are so touched and truly grateful for this act of kindness.

Happy Heavenly Birthday, Ian!

Thank you, Pittsford Crew!

Our Friends at Pittsford Crew are not only dedicated to their sport and team, but to also making an impact in their community. Each year they have a spring fundraiser for the club and the athletes choose a local charity to support with a portion of the proceeds raised. This reinforces a mindset of being community oriented for the athletes and families. This year they chose C.U.R.E.!

We are honored they picked our organization and are making a difference for our Families. Thank you for dedication!

QUEST Elementary brings Joy!

A HUGE thank you to the QUEST Elementary PTSO for thinking of C.U.R.E. as they brought joy this school year. The Joy Shop invites students and community members to make gifts to sell and everything is under $5. The students take a lot of pride in making fun little phone holders our of old Jenga blocks and handmaking bracelets. Some incredible community members even crocheted items to donate for the students to purchase. This wonderful Joy Shop also included quilted coasters, homemade candy dispensers, coasters and more! The PTSO then decided to donate proceeds to a local nonprofit. C.U.R.E. is delighted to have been selected as the recipient of the proceeds this year. It warms our heart to see the community coming together, all the creativity involved and most importantly, kids helping kids!

A Whole Lot of Squishmallows!

Lynne and Randy from CURE Bears for Hope and Love showered our C.U.R.E. Kids and Sibs, once again, with an amazing gift: Squishmallows! They purchased the Squishmallows with funds generated through CURE Bears for Hope and Love (and a LOT of can and bottle return money) to bring a smile to our Kids’ faces. We are so grateful for their willingness to give our Kids something they love so much. We appreciate them joining us at our Annual Survivors’ Day Picnic in June. Thanks so much for always keeping our Kids in your hearts!

Strike Out for a Cause!

The Honeoye Falls-Lima Teacher’s Union held a Bowling Fundraiser for their teachers and some of the students to join! It was a fun-filled day with lots of raffle prizes, strikes, spares and no gutter balls (so we’re told…). The Teacher’s Union raised $1,000 for C.U.R.E. and our Families! We are so grateful for their kindness and making a difference in our community. Thank you to all who participated and made this day happen!

You’re a Treasure, Pirate Toy Fund!

Thank you so much to Pirate Toy Fund for your help with the toys every year for this special day for C.U.R.E. Families and for showing up at this event to help add more fun to the day! We are so grateful for the fun and smiles you bring to our Annual Survivors’ Day Picnic.

The kids love to see the pirates every year and the joy they bring out in the children is immeasurable. All the kids love the bounce houses and say it is one of their favorite parts of the whole day!

Everyone at Pirate Toy Fund is always so friendly and helpful and willing to go the extra mile to see these Kiddos smile.

We appreciate you!!!

Revvin’ Engines for a Cause!

We are so thankful for our Friends at THOR Promotions and The Shops On West Ridge who put on this year's 5th Annual Father's Day Car Show! It was a wonderful day filled with sweet rides, good company, and great food from Smoke 'N the Valley BBQ! They had over 50 cars in attendance and EVEN more people to make the day complete!

Thank you for spreading awareness for C.U.R.E. and raising $1,500 for our Families. We are so grateful for community partners like you🎗

Let’s Go Hawks!

The Rochester Knighthawks have been so wonderful to our C.U.R.E. Families over the years! Back in January, C.U.R.E. hosted a night at the Knighthawks game and Families were able to spend a night out together! To coincide with this, the Knighthawks held a 90’s Night Jersey Auction where they auctioned off signed jerseys to the public that took place over several days.

The auction raised over $10,000 of which was donated to C.U.R.E.! We are so grateful for their kindness and for always thinking of our Families. Go Hawks!

Please give a hand for our Advocate of the Month….

Inga Mucha-Putney!

This month, we would like to recognize our good Friend and Advocate, Inga Mucha-Putney. For the last three years, Inga Mucha Photography has been taking pictures at our Survivors’ Day Picnic and Holiday Party. She gives so much of her time to these special events from the first picture all the way through the edits and sending of the photos to us. Her kind heart and beautiful smile always makes our day brighter. We are so grateful that she takes a snapshot of these moments in time and shares them with our Families at these events. We cannot thank her enough for all the memories that she has helped to preserve along the way on these wonderful days.

Inga, your consistent and unwavering support by capturing so many smiles is appreciated more than you know!
