June 2023 Newsletter

C.U.R.E. is here.

From the day of diagnosis, throughout treatment and beyond:
The support doesn’t stop when the treatment stops.

And we are so thankful for our Friends who make our support possible.

Spotlight on: Kayden

Meet our Friend, Kayden.

Kayden is 3 years old! He was diagnosed with cancer in July 2022 and is coming up on a year of treatment. He is the most kind, loving boy you could ever imagine. He loves being outside playing with bubbles and riding his three wheel bike!

Please join us in sending love to Kayden and his family as they near the one-year mark for treatment!

The 2023 John & Judi Sturge Dedicated Volunteer Award Recipients: Sam & Anita Manuele

When the Staff started discussing the various awards we would be distributing tonight, this award was discussed at length. Of course, as a discussion around the importance of the contributions of The Sturge Family but also reflecting on the past year, but also is there anyone who continuously dedicates time and efforts to bettering the lives of our Families and what do they do? I think I speak for the whole staff when I share how much the recipients of this year’s John and Judi Sturge Dedicated Volunteers have improved the lives of us here in the office. Being a small staff, we tend to move from event to event, task to task, without much time available for clean up or organizing or debriefing. As you know, there is always something going on here. These volunteers have taken us under their wings and have filled in gaps we didn’t even know existed – much like the work we do for our C.U.R.E. Families. The best part of having these volunteers here, aside from improving our quality of work and the occasional cookies that magically appear on our desks, has been developing relationships with them. They care so deeply for our organization but also for our community as a whole. I literally have no idea how they squeeze it all in. I have no idea how they can possibly pack so much good into their days and their weeks, but they do. The other significant benefit of them being here is the utilization and implementation of their skillsets. One volunteer knows ALL THINGS gardening, being handy, outdoors…many of these things we as a staff know nothing about. The other volunteer has a super power ability to organize and visualize how best to place things. Spacial awareness is certainly not one of my strong points…either is using power tools. But my gosh….this pair….the power duo…are amazing.
In addition to so generously giving us so much of their time, they also are fierce advocates of our organization and the work we do here. Soliciting donations, encouraging participation in fundraisers…all meaningful contributions to our organization that, at the end of the day, enable us to take better care of our Families.
It has truly been an honor getting to know them, developing a deeper relationship with them and seeing them weekly. As Carol said “they are the kindest and most wonderful people you could ever want to meet”. We are grateful for you both, our 2023 C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association John and Judi Sturge Dedicated Volunteer Recipients: Sam and Anita Manuele.

The 2023 Strong Partner Award Recipient: Javier Laza

Each year we like to recognize someone who works at the hospital and award them with our Outstanding Strong Partner Award. I am very honored to get to share with you about tonight’s recipient. It is someone that most Families know and all love.
When you are bringing your child to a clinic visit weekly, multiple times a week, monthly or even yearly it can be a challenging day for them, I know this first hand. And I also know its how the visit starts that sets the tone for the remainder of it. Having a friendly face to call you in and start your child’s vitals all while asking them about the latest video game they are playing or if they have seen the latest Marvel movie or chasing them around as they run away really helps to put everyone at ease. Then during your visit coming in to give them pillows, blankets, lunch, and not only is he checking on your child but on you as well, to see if either of you need anything while you are there whether its a one hour visit or a 7 hour visit. And I have to tell you, the kids absolutely adore him wanting him to come in the room and joke around with them some more. This person goes above and beyond what their job is, really caring for the kids, going to visit them when they are inpatient for a long time and spending the extra time playing with them (I mean I know he really likes it since he’s a big kid himself but still!)
My job at the hospital would not be as easy without him there. He takes care of all of our families by handing out our free parking vouchers to them, making sure he tells me if any of the kids need any type of help from C.U.R.E. while they are there and handles all of the paperwork I have to give him! He is just really a big help and such an advocate for C.U.R.E. we appreciate it so much.
I have known this person for a long time, I want to say 15 years, from when I started to bring my son Geovanni to his clinic visits. I had these same experiences then that I described and honestly still do when Geovanni comes to clinic every year now. And many Families have told me how amazing they think this person is and how they are so thankful to have someone like him working in the hospital outpatient clinic. I hope you really know what a difference you are making in these Families’ lives everyday, ours included, and what a huge help you are to this organization.
I am very proud on behalf of C.U.R.E to announce the recipient of the Outstanding Strong Partner Award goes to Javier Laza.

The 2023 Dedicated Family Award Recipients: The Visconte Family

Working at C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association is challenging and rewarding all at the same time. The challenge revolves around the nature of our work. We witness Families facing their worst nightmares regularly. Our greatest challenge is being able to meet the needs of these Families, easing their fears as they navigate unprecedentedly difficult times in their lives. Meeting the needs is a complex equation of time, talent and treasure. C.U.R.E. is a small fish in a big pond. With over 5,000 nonprofits in our community, how do we stand out so that we can garner time, talent and treasure locally? Dedicated volunteers are the life blood of our organization. Our small, yet dedicated staff, simply could not meet the needs of our Families alone. We need the help. This is where the reward portion of working with C.U.R.E. comes in.
In reflecting on the support our organization receives, certain key factors come to mind. How could we possibly get xyz done with just our Staff? This Family continuously steps up and steps into volunteer mode. The mom of this Family coming later in the afternoon to distribute Brunch auction items from our office and alleviating staff from working another late night and gifting the staff time with their own family. This mom coming in to fold and organize t-shirts before a big event. This mom and her kiddos putting together ornament making kits for our Holiday party or grouping hundreds of pieces of glow stick necklaces together for our Families to enjoy at the Red Wings Survivors’ Night.
Here's where the rewarding part comes in. Meeting Families who want to help other Families is truly heartwarming. Seeing C.U.R.E. Families dedicate so much of themselves to other Families, raising awareness and offering support is such a tremendously beautiful thing to witness.
Awareness is a big initiative of C.U.R.E. But, again, how do we stand out amongst all the nonprofits in Rochester with everyone vying for the attention of its community members? This Family steps up. “Flocking” is an idea we came up with several years ago to raise awareness of childhood cancer in September. Gold flamingos migrate from yard to yard with a lawn sign stating it’s to raise awareness of childhood cancer and funds for C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association. This family went from Farmington to Williamson and everywhere in between. They were excited helpers that truly made a difference in spreading awareness and made our Flocking possible. Staff simply would not have the availability to move our tropical friends. This family did it with enthusiasm and pride. The kiddos were disappointed that the news footage that was filmed didn’t air on tv. Will you all, please join me in recognizing them and their efforts? You may not be famous on tv, but your famous to us! Marianna, Russell, Ella, Jenilee and Tom Visconte – C.U.R.E.’s Dedicated Family Volunteer Award Recipients for 2023.
Thank you for being such a rewarding part of our jobs. Our lives are enriched and better for knowing you.

The 2023 C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association Rookie of the Year Award Recipient: Brenda Indelicato

The Rookie of the Year Award was issued to its inaugural recipient in 2019. A hard-working, dedicated Board member was given this award. Since then, he has been at every event he could possibly attend, engaging with our Families and really getting to know them. Joe DiFabio is a relationship builder. He’s someone who feels strongly about making a difference and advocating for our Families, while providing top notch services to them. He is also very supportive of the Staff at C.U.R.E. The awards we distribute at our Volunteer Appreciation Award Dinner aren’t necessarily given every year. We issue the awards when we feel volunteers embody the meaning behind the awards. As such, we haven’t issued the Rookie of the Year award since 2019….until now.
Being a volunteer at our organization involves making the time to be present at events or helping at the office and behind the scenes. In today’s world, everyone is busy and has a million things going on, but this person always makes an effort to be present – to attend events and to corral their network into participating in events. When I first started at C.U.R.E., I joked that the organization is like a Hoover vacuum, it sucks people in and once you’re here, you fall in love with the mission and the services we provide. The 2023 Rookie of the Year embodies this analogy – sucking in their network, introducing our organization to people around them and helping them to fall in love with the mission of C.U.R.E. This individual has made invaluable connections to our organization, introducing us to truly dedicated sponsors and volunteers – both of which give us the tools we need to fulfill our mission. This person always has the best interests of our Families in mind and goes above and beyond for them whenever possible. The 2023 Rookie of the Year recipient also offers their skills to our organization, offering guidance and assistance to our Staff. Again, being a small staff, we don’t have every skillset and expertise to meet every need of the organization. Having someone offer their skills is such a gift and enables the Staff to continue our mission, knowing certain tasks are in good and capable hands.
If I were to refer to this person using an acronym, it would be “G.S.D.” This person is on the “Get Stuff Done” Committee. Let’s discuss the issue/challenge or task at hand, figure out a solution and get it done. You need volunteers at the 5k? Done (even though my daughter’s prom is that evening). You need volunteers at the Survivor’s Day Picnic? Done AND I’ll bring my friends with me dressed up in costume to bring delight and joy to the children in attendance. You need decorations for the Brunch? Done. My friends and I will wow everyone in attendance with our skill, organization and capable hands. Our dedicated Board Member, Brenda Indelicato, gets stuff done. And it is our great pleasure to recognize her efforts as the 2023 (slightly delayed because of COVID) C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association Rookie of the Year

The 2023 C.U.R.E. Outstanding Community Partner Recipients: West Herr Auto Group

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” – Winston Churchill

Our Dedicated Community Partner Award recipients are constantly doing good in the communities around them. We truly believe that they understand the importance of balance – making a living and doing business, but also investing back into the communities that afford them the opportunity to exist. It’s an interesting model that really could be the catalyst for change in our world. Changemakers. This particular group of businesses are changemakers. Not only do they value the staff and employees who make their business operate, but they also recognize they could not do what they do without the support of the community…much like C.U.R.E. Our organization could not exist without the kindness of our community, without the contributions of time and talent of our community members, without the dedication of our staff. The magnitude of difference this company makes in the communities it serves is immeasurable. They are constantly giving back, and we are so honored and grateful to be included in their philanthropic service. We are humbled that they believe in our mission, the work we do and the services we provide to local Families. So, what do they do?
For the past few years, our Families were given the gift of turkeys at the holidays. When financial hardship becomes almost too unbearable to overcome and the thought of the holidays and feeding your Family become overwhelming, this company was there – easing the minds of our Families and giving them the gift of togetherness, taking their worries away. There is a lot to be said about removing stressors, especially during the holidays. This company came in and also eased our stressors, by unloading 30 holiday turkeys and carting them into our building!
What’s more? This company gives back financially. Sponsoring events is a huge undertaking for businesses, especially in this post-COVID world we are all navigating. Making giving back to the community a priority, even during uncertain times, says a lot about the integrity and mission of a business. We have been truly blessed to partner up with this company on many occasions, including our Patrick Carr Memorial Golf Tournament and our Recipe for a C.U.R.E. Sunday Brunch.
We are honored to award West Herr Auto Group with the 2023 C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association Dedicated Community Partners Award.

Resources:

Childhood Cancer Survivor Scholarship and Employment Resources:

Children's Cancer Cause is assisting childhood cancer patients, survivors and families by centralizing most national resources that provide scholarships for survivors of childhood cancer or those with particular effects. The site also has resources and advice relating to employment and applying for these scholarships.

Some opportunities require commitment to a childhood cancer advocacy project while in college, while others make you eligible for you just being you.  But you do need to apply! Be sure to read the instructions and qualifications very carefully. Apply in plenty of time to get feedback from family, guidance counselors and others. Board Member, Jacob Adams, would be happy to help if given at least two weeks’ notice. Please contact the office for his e-mail address.

Catching Dreams

Catching Dreams Charters, Inc. hosts private fishing charters near Buffalo on Lake Erie or the Niagara River for pediatric oncology or hematology children.

We have connected with Captain Ned, the Founder of this organization, and would love to connect our C.U.R.E. Kids to Ned and schedule some fishing charters! Charters are scheduled for during the week from mid-May through Labor Day and leave from the Buffalo Harbor or near the Niagara River.

Please reach out to Captain Ned if you are interested in a private fishing charter.

GRYT Health connects patients and caregivers to others with shared experience and to information relevant to their journey.

Through the GRYT app, we’ve created a platform for people affected by cancer to connect to others with similar experiences, and to tailored information that helps our users become more aware of options specific to their needs or diagnosis – empowering them to make choices that are right for them.

Our community of patients, survivors, medical professionals, researchers and advocates across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 100 countries worldwide have participated in almost 1,000,000 interactions to date, inspiring people to live according to their own standards.

Trust from our community is paramount to our success and something we take very seriously. We never share any of our users’ information without their explicit permission. Unlike other apps, GRYT is the first social community that is funded, built, and run by patients and caregivers where users communicate anonymously in real-time and each person is 100% in charge of what happens with their data.

Thank you, A-Choice Landscaping!

We are so grateful for our Friends at A-Choice Landscaping for coming to our rescue after our 5k and Fun Walk Event. They volunteered their time and talents to repair the track marks left by the ambulance that was at our 5k & Fun Walk to keep our participants safe. It sure was a wet one that day and nobody expected it to be so sloshy and muddy. We are grateful for the Brighton Parks & Rec Department for hosting our event and being so kind to us with the issues caused by the rain.

We are also grateful for the effort of Lynne Stiefler, who helped us find A Choice Landscaping to fix the damage! We are so blessed to have such wonderful Friends.

Iroquois Middle School is amazing!

We continue to be grateful for the leadership of the Service Club at Iroquois Middle School and their commitment to our Families. They, once again, hosted a Penny Drive for C.U.R.E. and knocked it out of the park! They generated over $1,200 for C.U.R.E.! A tremendous thank you to everyone who participated, helped and donated! Thank you for being good leaders in your school, Service Club!

These guys have green thumbs (and BIG hearts!)

We are so grateful to Don Miller & his Friends from Xerox who come and beautify our garden annually. These gentlemen weeded our Julie Roberts Children's Memorial Garden, planted beautiful flowers that they donated AND spread mulch that they donated. All was done in an effort to make it look perfect to honor our little Angels at our annual Brick Laying Ceremony.

Thank you, Gentlemen. Everything was perfect because of your efforts and love!

Thank you, RDI!

Our Friends at RDI Diamonds continue to SHOW UP for our Families in such a BIG way! Their advocacy to further our mission is truly appreciated. YOU help to give us the tools we need to provide valuable support and we are beyond grateful. Thank you, your Staff and your Clients for believing in the work we do and helping to make it all possible.

Thank you for caring, PICS!

We were so lucky to have been chosen by the team at PICS to help us out in the office on the United Way Day of Caring on May 11th. The team at PICS helped us with various projects from assembling Patient/Parent Organizers to clearing the weeds in our back parking lot and even set up our garden hose for the season! We appreciate the care with which they took while volunteering and are looking forward to working together more in the near future!

#Grateful for Arkport National Honor Society!

We are beyond grateful for our Friends at Arkport Central School for continuing to keep our Families in their hearts! They, once again, selected C.U.R.E. to receive proceeds from their meat stick fundraiser and we are thrilled! We loved supplying the students with gold sunglasses to keep up the advocacy for childhood cancer awareness throughout the summer months, too! What a great group of students!

Thank you, Johanna Perrin Middle School!

A BIG thank you goes out to our Friends at Johanna Perrin Middle School who participated in our Million Penny Drive this year! We are so grateful for their collection of OVER $200!!! Thank you for letting our Kids and their Families know they are not alone in their battles!

Marilyn brings comfort!

Our friend Marilyn brings comfort to our Kiddos through her handmade pillows! With lots of fun patterns to choose from, Marilyn creates and donates these pillows for us to add to our comfort bags. These come in handy for armchairs and as neck resting pillows! Thank you, Marilyn, for always thinking of our children and continuing to make a difference through your kindness and creativity!
