November 2022 Newsletter

C.U.R.E. is here.

From the day of diagnosis, throughout treatment and beyond:
The support doesn’t stop when the treatment stops.

And we are so thankful for our Friends who make our support possible.

Spotlight on: Remi

Meet our friend, Remi.

Remi loves Sesame Street, reading books, dancing and music, playing with balls and being with friends and Family. Her Teacher says she has the happiest demeanor and her Family agrees! She loves to be outside and go on adventures. Remi loves being a big sister to her new little baby brother, too!

Remi was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) on July 21, 2022. While in the hospital, she likes to go for walks and see the horse statue (or "neigh" as Remi calls it) at the front of the hospital. She loves to walk outside around the hospital and go see Remi's Rock Garden. She loves to play with balls in the play deck. She also loves to have the doctors and nurses listen to her heart and lungs with their stethoscope!

Remi’s Family shared that they are so grateful for their incredible health care team, C.U.R.E. family, and all of the support through this challenging and humbling time.

Hooray, Maddox!

Sending love and congratulations to Maddox who, along with his Family, came and rang the End of Chemo Bell in our office on October 19th. He also added his Handprint on the “Handprints of Hope” wall we have here at the office and we treated him to an assortment of his favorite snack: Brownies!

Thanks, VerHulst Haunted Hayride

Many thanks to VerHulst Haunted Hayride for an incredible evening of frights and sights on October 14th. Thank you for your generous ticket donations and a fun night riding through the forest with the ghosts, ghouls and many more scary characters. Our C.U.R.E. Parents enjoyed a SPOOKTACULAR night as a result of your kindness!

Reaching new heights together!

Parents’ Day Out at Bristol Mountain Aerial Adventures was an afternoon of reaching for the tree tops. Each level was more challenging than the next. It was a beautiful fall day to take on this adventure together. Many thanks to Bristol Mountain staff for all of their help to make this day happen. Stay tuned for the next Parents’ Night/Day Out!

Resources:

Childhood Cancer Survivor Scholarship and Employment Resources:

Children's Cancer Cause is assisting childhood cancer patients, survivors and families by centralizing most national resources that provide scholarships for survivors of childhood cancer or those with particular effects. The site also has resources and advice relating to employment and applying for these scholarships.

Some opportunities require commitment to a childhood cancer advocacy project while in college, while others make you eligible for you just being you.  But you do need to apply! Be sure to read the instructions and qualifications very carefully. Apply in plenty of time to get feedback from family, guidance counselors and others. Board Member, Jacob Adams, would be happy to help if given at least two weeks’ notice. Please contact the office for his e-mail address.

If you are in need of support this Holiday Season, please check out this document that lists support services available locally.

Catching Dreams

Catching Dreams Charters, Inc. hosts private fishing charters near Buffalo on Lake Erie or the Niagara River for pediatric oncology or hematology children.

We have connected with Captain Ned, the Founder of this organization, and would love to connect our C.U.R.E. Kids to Ned and schedule some fishing charters! Charters are scheduled for during the week from mid-May through Labor Day and leave from the Buffalo Harbor or near the Niagara River.

Please reach out to Carol Austin if you are interested in a private fishing charter.

Any Teens with Sickle Cell Interested…

Dr. Noronha is trying to gauge interest from local teens with Sickle Cell Disease around having Zoom Meet Ups this summer. If you (or your child) is 13 years old - 17 years old and interested, please contact Dr. Noronha.

Donate Blood or Platelets!

Many of our children depend on blood transfusions and blood products in the course of their treatment. Our children are in need of blood products and you can help! Please consider donating blood if you are well enough to.

GRYT Health connects patients and caregivers to others with shared experience and to information relevant to their journey.

Through the GRYT app, we’ve created a platform for people affected by cancer to connect to others with similar experiences, and to tailored information that helps our users become more aware of options specific to their needs or diagnosis – empowering them to make choices that are right for them.

Our community of patients, survivors, medical professionals, researchers and advocates across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 100 countries worldwide have participated in almost 1,000,000 interactions to date, inspiring people to live according to their own standards.

Trust from our community is paramount to our success and something we take very seriously. We never share any of our users’ information without their explicit permission. Unlike other apps, GRYT is the first social community that is funded, built, and run by patients and caregivers where users communicate anonymously in real-time and each person is 100% in charge of what happens with their data.

Girl Scout Troop 60140 are Good Neighbors!

We are so grateful for our Friends in Girl Scout Troop 60140 who earned their “Be a Good Neighbor” badge by making a bracelet for themselves and putting together kits for C.U.R.E. Kids. The girls wanted to support a child in their community and try to bring a smile to their faces during difficult times. The girls worked together and bonded over making the kits together. Twenty kits in total were donated. Additionally, the sister of one of the Troop Members, Ellie, donated earrings that she handmade!

Thanks, Girls!

Thank you, Herrmann Family!

In celebration of Scott Herrmann’s birthday, he and his Family asked for donations to C.U.R.E. to recognize 20 years cancer free! We were so humbled to be a part of the celebration. Over $4,000 was raised as a result of their kindness! Wishing you many more happy birthdays, Scott. Thank you for thinking of our Families!

Thank you, RDI!

RDI Diamonds came through again in October with an incredible donation. Monthly, they are contributing a portion of their commissions to help our Families. We are blown away by their kindness.

Thank you for working so hard to provide our Families with the practical support we provide. Thank you for championing our Mission. What an honor it is to get to work with such dedicated Community Members!

Thank you, Crash Cadillac

We received a very generous donation from the folks at Crash Cadillac. They collect can tabs at their shows in honor of our Friend Hailey for the “Keeping Tabs on Cancer With Hailey” program. Hearts for Hailey has been dedicated to C.U.R.E. and raising money for our parking voucher program for many years. Their kindness, and the kindness of those around them who collect can tabs, has made a significant impact on our Families: helping to pay for their parking fees at Golisano Children’s Hospital. Thank you!
