October 2025 Newsletter

Once upon a time, a group of Parents each lost a Child to Pediatric Cancer. They were faced with many challenges but worked together to form C.U.R.E. with the hope of helping future Families who also receive that devastating diagnosis.

Life is not a fairy tale, but fairy tales pose challenges to the characters involved and the Village comes together to try to help overcome the challenges. C.U.R.E.’s mission is to provide loving support to local Pediatric Oncology and Hematology Families. We aim to be the Village of support that wraps our arms around our Families to help them through their challenges.

Every Family’s story is different. C.U.R.E. travels alongside our Families through their unique stories to help wherever we can.

Our theme for 2025 is Fairytales!

3rd quarter update

The third quarter of 2025 was another challenging period of time for our Families. We saw 12 newly diagnosed children and, sadly, we lost 2 children. We continue to wrap our Families in love and support them however we can. In addition to the support shown to the right, C.U.R.E.:

- Provided Bells to 2 Kiddos for End of Chemo Bell Ringings
- Hosted 6 Parents’ Nights Out
- Partnered with the Buffalo Bills to offer a VIP Tent Experience to several Families at Training Camp
- Assisted Families with over $6,000 in Emergency Financial Assistance
- Partnered with CompassionNet to pay for at home services for one of our Families through our Phillip’s Gift Program
- Distributed LOTS of toys, games, hats and even Rochester Red Wings tickets to Children in the hospital.

Thank you for embracing C.U.R.E.’s mission so we can continue to provide loving support to our Families. Together, we are making a difference.

We were busy in September…

Check out: “What I Wish I Knew…”

We are sharing a new series of YouTube videos called “What I Wish I Knew”. They will be from the perspective of Parents, Caregivers, Providers and more.

Spotlight on: Marley

Meet our Friend, Marley.

Marley is incredibly curious, always asking questions and wanting to learn new things. She is full of personality, has the biggest heart and loves to make people laugh. She said the best part about having to be in the hospital are the people she has met: the ones who make this experience a little easier like the nurses, doctors, administrators. C.U.R.E. and Child Life have been really helpful. This entire moment has felt like a dream that started off as a nightmare and ended with relief. Without all these people, Marley and her Family don’t feel like they would have made it this far. Marley was diagnosed with Severe Aplastic Anemia in February 2025 and received a bone marrow transplat.

Catching Dreams:

Turning Wishing Into Fishing

Captain Ned and his “Dream Team” of certified Coast Guard Captains and guides at Catching Dreams FIshing Charters are so great to our C.U.R.E. Kiddos and their Families! This non-profit provides fishing adventures for children and young adults battling cancer! They create meaningful moments and memories on the waters of Western New York by “turning wishing into fishing”!

These free fishing charters offer the highest level of professionalism, safety and ability. The special opportunities allow kids who are battling cancer to regain a sense of normalcy in their lives, find respite from the challenges of cancer treatment and spend time learning and enjoying a new activity.

Captain Ned also comes to C.U.R.E.’s Survivors’ Day Picnic every year and shares free fishing poles with the Families and is so thoughtful in every way! We are so grateful for Captain Ned and his “Dream Team!”

Jeffrey Charles Sewell Memorial Scholarship

Along with their children, Ed and Nancy Sewell established the Jeffrey Charles Sewell Memorial Scholarship in memory of their son (and brother) in 2022. Ed and Nancy joined us from Connecticut for our Annual Recipe for a C.U.R.E. Sunday Brunch. When they were in town, they were able to meet up with their 2025 scholarship recipient for lunch! It was a lovely afternoon sharing stories and conversation.

Stay tuned to upcoming newsletters to learn about applying for the 2026 Jeffrey Charles Sewell Memorial Scholarship.

CANDICE’S SICKLE CELL FUND SCHOLARSHIP

Candice’s Sickle Cell Anemia Fund, Inc., is a powerful initiative founded by Candice Young-Deler, who has courageously overcome the challenges of living with Sickle Cell Disease. Inspired by her own academic journey, Candice created this scholarship to support students living with Sickle Cell who are pursuing higher education.

Each year, the fund awards $1,500 scholarships to three deserving individuals, helping ease the financial burden and recognize their resilience and determination. These scholarships not only provide financial support but also affirm the strength and potential of students facing chronic health challenges.

💡 Why It Matters:
Students with Sickle Cell often face painful health episodes that disrupt their education. This fund helps ensure that their dreams of college and career success remain within reach.

Our hearts are brimming with love after the enchanting success of our Recipe For A C.U.R.E. Sunday Brunch, presented by West Herr Cares! Thanks to everyone’s kindness and generosity, local families will feel the warmth of your magic — and for that, we are endlessly grateful. 💛

A royal round of applause to our delightful emcees, Sandy Waters & Scott Spezzano, for filling the room with laughter, joy, and light. We extend our deepest thanks to our presenting sponsor, West Herr Cares, whose steadfast support continues to shine like a guiding star. And to the gifted Culinary Wizards of the ACF, whose creations were nothing short of spellbinding — you made the day deliciously unforgettable!

To our devoted sponsors, generous donors, and all who joined us — thank you for weaving your hearts into this story. Together, we’re bringing hope and comfort to the families we serve.

Thank You Community Partners!

Our Sunday Brunch was made even more special thanks to the incredible support of our community partners - Alexa Lacey Photography for capturing the day, The Celebration Statement for decor, JFS Curtze for product donation, Jersey Mike’s for donating lunch for volunteers and Morgan Country Gardens & Floral Design & Rockcastle Florist for supplying the flower bar!

Your donated time, talents, and products helped created a day filled with flavor, joy, and generosity. Thank you for pouring your hearts into helping make a difference for local families supported by C.U.R.E.

We Couldn’t Do It Without You!

We are so grateful for all of the helping hands that made the brunch such a success! To kick it off the day before the brunch, 12 volunteers came together to help us prep for our big event. They helped load up a big truck with over 200 silent auction baskets and had them ready for transport the next day.

Before, during and after the event, we had over 30+ volunteers help with set up & decorations, table service, check-in, and clean up. All their helping hands made the day much easier for everyone involved.

We are so grateful for everyone that made themselves available to make it happen.

Thank you all for your incredible, hard work!

Thank you Undersheriff & Friends!

Throughout the month of September, Undersheriff Korey Brown ran a 5k a day to spread awareness for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. The Undersheriff has a close connection to C.U.R.E. as his grandson, Joel, had fought his battle with childhood cancer. Every day, he posted on Facebook a C.U.R.E. kid he was running for that day and highlighted their story. On the last day of the month, he along with 30 other friends, including C.U.R.E. kid JJ, ran the last 5k past our office. We are so grateful for their advocacy and bringing awareness in our community. Altogether, over $5,700 was raised to help C.U.R.E. and our Families.

Thank you, Korey Brown, for using your platform to bring light to our Families and believing in the work C.U.R.E. does for our community.

Brewing up Goodness!

We are so grateful to our Friends at Untamed Nutrition who helped spread awareness for Childhood Cancer & Sickle Awareness last month. They created a specialty raspberry & pineapple tea and for every one sold, they donated $1 to C.U.R.E. they also took in donations by selling yellow ribbons for customers to hang in their shop. Altogether they raised $700 for C.U.R.E.!

Thank you Untamed for continuing to support our mission every September!

Cozy Comfort For our Kiddos!

Throughout September, Ellie asked her Friends to help her collect her favorite comfort items that made her happy during her hospital stays. Items included fun socks, slippers, hats, and cozy blankets. Her goal was to bring comfort to other kiddos going through similar experiences.

With their help, Ellie collected over 100 items for our kiddos! We are so grateful to Ellie & her Friends and Family who made this possible. Thank you, Ellie, for thinking of other kids just like and making an impact during their journey!

RYP is connecting with our Community!

Rochester Young Professionals knows how important it is stand alongside our community and for September they chose to do a Toy Drive to support C.U.R.E. at one of their networking nights! Participants brought a toy to donate, enjoyed eachother’s company and had some tasty bites.

Thank you, Rochester Young Professionals for thinking of our Families and choosing to support C.U.R.E.’s mission. 💛

Raising Awareness at Cal-Mum!

The Cal-Mum National Honor Society sold gold ribbons to raise money for C.U.R.E. The ribbons were hung up in the front entryway of the building during September, so everyone who entered and exited the building got to see the ribbons - further raising awareness. A total of $500 was raised to help further our mission.

Thank you for making a difference in our community!

Hopping with Joy!

We are hopping with joy for the generosity received through proceeds of the 2025 A.P. Enterprises Easter Egg Hunt. C.U.R.E. is so grateful for the time and effort put towards the event by Sean Fico and his Team. We are also appreciative of the overwhelming support by the community who came out to the event and contributed to our cause.

Thank you so much for the kindness!

In Honor of Mark Dillon…

We are deeply grateful to have been chosen as a recipient of proceeds from the annual Mark Dillon Memorial Golf Tournament held this summer. Each year, the Dillon Family and Friends come together to remember Mark through a day of golf and camaraderie. What makes this event especially meaningful is the way family members travel from across the country to honor his memory.

It is truly touching to be part of Mark’s legacy, and we are so appreciative that the Dillon Family continues to hold both their C.U.R.E. Family and the Families we serve so close to their hearts.

Our sincerest thanks to everyone who made this special event possible!

Thanks for getting soaked!

Our Friends at Hu-Friedy hosted a “Soak a Boss” Spray Tank fundraiser this summer with proceeds benefitting C.U.R.E.! They contributed over $1,000 to raise money for our organization (we’re sure it was for the cause and NOT to soak their Boss…although, it was held on a particularly warm day so the soaking was appreciated we’re sure). Thank you to Sue for nominating C.U.R.E. to receive proceeds in memory of your sweet Annalise.

Thank you, Recruits!

We are tremendously grateful for our Friend Lt. Vislay and the Police Academy Recruit Class 78 for advocating for our Families. The group ran the Rochester Marathon in September and raised money for C.U.R.E. in the process. To date, nearly $2,500 has been raised! We are blown away by your dedication to our Community - both through your service and your philanthropy. Thank you for making us part of your mission!

Gaming for Geovanni

A whole crew came out to support C.U.R.E. in honor of Geovanni in September. Eric’s Retro Arcade (ERA) is so cool with old school games. Eric was kind enough to donate HALF of the proceeds from each entry fee to C.U.R.E. Coupled with some great auction items curated by Michelle and her Family, over $1,200 was raised! Thanks so much to Michelle and her Family for putting this event on and to Eric for being so kind and having a really cool place. Be sure to check out ERA’s in Spencerport!

Lemon-AIDing our Families

Thank you to Charlotte, Conor, Ayush and Bennett for hosting a lemonade stand to raise money for C.U.R.E. The lemonade stand included everything from pink lemonade to iced tea and even some K Pop Demon Hunters songs for entertainment. Our hearts are always touched when our youngest supporters see the value of our work and want to help. Proceeds from the Lemonade Stand were donated to C.U.R.E. and the Celiac Disease Foundation.

Thanks for thinking of our Families, Kids!

REV Supporting Our Kiddos In September

To help bring awareness for September Childhood Cancer Month, our friends at Healthy Highway donated 10 Rev dog pillow for our kiddos! Healthy Highway is a Rochester, NY non-profit uniting businesses, families, and organizations to support children in need through community-driven events and awareness.

We are so grateful for their support and for bringing smiles to our kiddos faces!

Please give a hand for our 2025 John & Judi Sturge Committed Volunteer….

Cat Kwiecien!

Once upon a time, the dedication of two of our Founders, John and Judi Sturge, was the cornerstone of C.U.R.E.’s commitment to local Families facing childhood cancer. Their unwavering advocacy ensured that Families not only received support but also had their needs fully met during their most challenging times. Through their vision and volunteer leadership, John and Judi helped shape C.U.R.E. into the organization it is today—one that now serves nearly 800 Families each year.

To honor their legacy, C.U.R.E. established the John and Judi Sturge Committed Volunteer Award. This award not only celebrates the remarkable contributions of John and Judi but also recognizes the continued dedication of volunteers who have followed in their footsteps. Each year, the award is presented to a Friend of C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association who exemplifies compassion, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to our mission. The recipient goes above and beyond to support our C.U.R.E. Kids and their Families, striving to make a meaningful difference in their lives. Through this award, we express our deepest gratitude to individuals or groups who embody the same spirit of service and dedication that John and Judi demonstrated so profoundly.

Our story continues with a heroine who carries on the compassion of the Sturges - a Mother who is as brave as a knight, but as caring and compassionate as the most well-loved queen. Tending not only to her duties as a teacher and a wife, she is a loving and supporting mother dedicated to her own little Swifty Princesses. She commits time to helping others, furthering C.U.R.E.’s Mission and supporting local Families - much of which was done as her Cancer Warrior Princess battled the beast that is cancer.

“It’s a labor of love” she will say upon the mention of the immense amount of work, organization and commitment she engrosses herself in every year through her help with the Recipe for a C.U.R.E. Sunday Brunch. A project as big as planning and executing the entire Silent Auction of this event takes perseverance and LOTS of time. Starting in February and working diligently until the very last auction item is picked up from our office, she wholeheartedly commits herself to making a difference to other Families like hers through the proceeds raised from the auction.

While this doesn’t even graze the surface of the dedication of our 2025 John and Judi Sturge Committed Volunteer, we hope you feel the love and admiration we, as a C.U.R.E. Staff, have for this individual. She makes the work we do possible. She genuinely cares about each and every Family facing this unimaginable battle and makes a difference through her commitment to this event.

To host a beautiful event with the most magnificent silent auction in the land, “All you need is faith, trust, and a little bit of pixie dust”...and our 2025 John and Judi Sturge Committed Volunteer.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who is the most committed Volunteer of all?
