October 2026 Newsletter
C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association is celebrating 50 years of impact, hope, and walking alongside Families during their most difficult times. As we honor the legacy built by our Founders, Supporters & Families, we’re also preparing for an exciting future. While we take pride in how far we’ve come, we’re even more energized by what’s ahead. Big, exciting things are on the horizon—the next chapter of C.U.R.E. is just the beginning.
Thank you for all who helped spread awareness in September!
To everyone who hosted their own fundraisers, sprinkled awareness with ice cream, supported local business in the Mac & Cheese challenge, made proclamations, posted their lawn signs and flags, wore gold, made donations and more! You helped make an impact in our community and are an advocates for our Families.
Special thanks to everyone who joined us at our first Blood Drive at our new location! In total we collected 25 units of blood - which was three units over our goal, and enough to impact 75 lives! Donating blood is an easy way to give back, especially as so many of our kiddos are in need during treatment.

Spotlight on: Luis
Meet our Friend, Luis!
Luis is a sweet little boy who just recently turned one! He loves watching Dancing Fruit and his big brother so much! Luis was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma earlier this year and is an inspiration to all who meet him. His sweet, little smile shines bright despite everything he is going through.
Congratulations, Shay!
Shay, aka Shayster, is an amazing teenager with the biggest heart and we are so happy to celebrate his bell ringing with him! He was joined by his family who came to show their support. Shay even learned to play the ‘no more chemo’ song on his guitar and performed it at his bell ringing at the hospital with the music therapy staff! For his special meal, he chose pizza and wings to enjoy with his family in our Bell Ringing room, his absolute favorite.

Along with their children, Ed and Nancy Sewell established the Jeffrey Charles Sewell Memorial Scholarship in memory of their son (and brother) in 2022. We were so grateful for Ed and Nancy to join us from Connecticut for our 50th Anniversary Golden Gala!
When they were in town, they were able to meet up with their 2026 scholarship recipient, Abby, for lunch! Stay tuned to upcoming newsletters to learn about applying for the 2027 Jeffrey Charles Sewell Memorial Scholarship.
The Vertex Foundation Scholarship for SCD & TDT helps people with sickle cell disease (SCD) or transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia (TDT) and their immediate families (spouses, siblings, caregivers and children) pursue two-year, three-year, four-year or graduate degrees by offsetting some of the cost of attending college or graduate school.
CANDICE’S SICKLE CELL FUND SCHOLARSHIP
Candice’s Sickle Cell Anemia Fund, Inc., is a powerful initiative founded by Candice Young-Deler, who has courageously overcome the challenges of living with Sickle Cell Disease. Inspired by her own academic journey, Candice created this scholarship to support students living with Sickle Cell who are pursuing higher education.
Each year, the fund awards $1,500 scholarships to three deserving individuals, helping ease the financial burden and recognize their resilience and determination. These scholarships not only provide financial support but also affirm the strength and potential of students facing chronic health challenges.
💡 Why It Matters:
Students with Sickle Cell often face painful health episodes that disrupt their education. This fund helps ensure that their dreams of college and career success remain within reach.

Our 50th Anniversary Golden Gala was a truly special evening, and we are filled with gratitude for everyone who helped make this milestone celebration possible. As we reflected on 50 years, we were reminded that C.U.R.E.’s legacy is built on the generosity, compassion, and commitment of the people who stand behind our mission.
To our presenting sponsor, West Herr Cares, thank you for making this unforgettable evening possible and for your continued investment in our community. To our Guests of Honor, the Gnage Family, thank you for sharing your story and allowing us to celebrate you. Your connection to our mission is a beautiful reminder of why this work matters so much.
We are incredibly grateful to the American Culinary Federation Chefs of Rochester for sharing their extraordinary talents and preparing a delicious spread that made the evening even more special. A special thank you to Joe Lomonaco for lending his time and talents as our auctioneer and helping make our live auction such a memorable part of the evening.
To our dedicated volunteers, both those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes in the weeks leading up to the Gala and those who gave their time and energy on event night, we cannot thank you enough. From the planning and preparation to the countless details that brought the evening together, this celebration would not have been possible without your support, dedication, and hardworking hands. You helped turn months of preparation into a meaningful celebration of our history and the Families we serve.
To every sponsor, donor, community partner, guest, volunteer, founder and friend who celebrated alongside us, thank you for being part of C.U.R.E.’s story. Your generosity and belief in our mission have helped shape the last 50 years, and your continued support will help carry that legacy forward for generations to come.
Here’s to 50 years of community, connection, and embracing Families at every turn. We are so grateful to have you beside us. 💛
As we celebrate C.U.R.E.’s 50th Anniversary, it’s important to remember that an organization’s legacy isn’t created by one person. It’s built over time by the many people who believe in its mission, give their time and talents, and dedicate themselves to the Families C.U.R.E. serves.
At C.U.R.E.’s Golden Gala, we were honored to recognize one of those people with the Impact & Legacy Award: Former Executive Director, Holly Dutcher.
For 12 years, Holly devoted herself to C.U.R.E. and to the Families at the heart of our mission. Her commitment went far beyond a job or title. She poured her energy, creativity and heart into leading the organization, strengthening its presence in our community, building relationships with supporters and, most importantly, keeping Families at the center of everything we do.
If you know Holly, you know her commitment to C.U.R.E. extended well beyond herself. She always had a way of bringing her entire family into everything she did! There were plenty of days when you could walk into Holly’s office and find a little Dutchling happily hanging out while Mom went about her C.U.R.E. business. Over the years, her kids even began volunteering on their own — from putting craft kits together in the office to helping at events like the Survivors’ Day Picnic.
Holly instilled a love for C.U.R.E. in the Dutchlings and showed them by example what it means to give back selflessly. C.U.R.E. was never simply a place where she worked. It was a mission she cared deeply about and one she made part of her life.
As we celebrate C.U.R.E.’s history, we also look toward its future — built on the foundation created by those who came before us. Holly is an important part of that foundation.
On behalf of the C.U.R.E. Board, staff, volunteers, supporters and, most importantly, the Families whose lives have been touched by C.U.R.E., thank you, Holly, for your years of service, your dedication, your heart and the lasting impact you have made.
Your impact will remain part of C.U.R.E. and the Families we serve for years to come.
Thank You Undersheriff!
Each September, Undersheriff Korey Brown goes the extra mile for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by running a 5K every day to raise awareness and support C.U.R.E. With a personal connection to our mission through his grandson, Joel, who bravely battled childhood cancer, Korey dedicates each run to a C.U.R.E. kid, sharing their story on Facebook, raising funds and helping shine a light on the Families behind our mission.
To close out the challenge, his crew started and finished their final 5K at C.U.R.E.’s office, with our staff cheering them on! This incredible effort raised more than $4,200 to support C.U.R.E. and the Families we serve.
Thank you, Korey, for turning your miles into meaningful impact, using your platform to amplify our Families’ stories, and continuing to champion C.U.R.E.’s mission in our community.
Ellie’s Army Gives Back!
For the second year in a row, Ellie and her Family are helping C.U.R.E. kiddos and kiddos at Golisano!
To help spread awareness for September, Ellie called on her Family and Friends to help her collect toys for all ages. This year, they collected 175 toys! The toys were split and half donated to C.U.R.E. to use around the holidays, and the rest to Golisano Children’s Hospital. Ellie said she’s so happy to give back to her friends!
We’re so grateful for Ellie and Ellie’s Army for supporting us and making a difference for kiddos like her!
DRIVING an Impact!
For the 5th year in a row, Drive for Dreams, in partnership with the The Birdsall Inn, hosted their Annual Get Lost In The Middle of Nowhere Poker Run!
It was held on August 22nd and it was their biggest gathering yet with 507 side by sides and 1,040 people registered! They traveled around 100 miles and made it a day to remember.
The proceeds were split between C.U.R.E. and 13Thirty Cancer Connect, donating $10,000 to each! We are so honored to be one of the recipients.
Thank you Nicole & Family for DRIVING this event and being advocates for our Families.
Team Elliot for the Win!
Elliot is one amazing C.U.R.E. kiddo! Over the summer, he made a beautiful piece of art full of color, made just for our office!
To help raise awareness in September, he put together a blanket drive. With the help of his Family and Wayne Central, they collected BOXES and BAGS full of blankets - everything from character themed, to cozy soft to small and big!
We are so grateful for Elliot not only sharing his talents with us, but also bringing his community together to help other C.U.R.E. Families in need. Thank you Elliot!
Miss Addy is wonderful!
Year after year, Addy brings her community together to raise funds, collect Scentsy Buddy Clips, and support C.U.R.E. Kids and Sibs. With the help of their Scentsy Friends, they continue to make a meaningful difference for the Families we serve.
We were thrilled to receive another special delivery at our office: 106 Scentsy Buddy Clips valued at $1,819.50! These cuddly friends will be shared with C.U.R.E. Kids throughout the holiday season and beyond, bringing a little extra joy when it’s needed most.
Thank you, Addy, for reminding us that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big impact!
Thank you CURE Bears for Hope & Love!
Our Friends, Lynne & Randy from CURE Bears For Hope and Love, always know just what we need to help keep our shelves stocked for Families. When we put out an ask for blankets - they did all they could to make sure we had them! They delivered blankets for every age and gender… all of which will be lovingly distributed to Families at the hospital or whoever is in need.
Thank you CURE Bears for Hope and Love for always thinking of our Families and making sure everyone is so well loved and cared for!
Block Out Cancer!
A huge thank you to the Brockport Girls Volleyball Team for hosting a Childhood Cancer Awareness Game on September 25th! The team showed their support by creating their own black and gold T-shirts and raising more than $150 for C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association.
We are so grateful to these athletes for using their voices, their teamwork, and their passion to support the Families we serve. Thank you for standing with C.U.R.E. and helping raise awareness for childhood cancer!
Thank you Victor Modified Cheerleaders!
Thank you to the Victor Modified Cheerleaders for helping shine a light on childhood cancer last month! The team hosted a special awareness game, showing their support by sporting gold sunglasses in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
We are so grateful to these athletes and coaches for using their voices and school community to raise awareness and stand alongside the children and Families served by C.U.R.E. Every effort to spread awareness makes a difference, and we’re cheering you on!
Tig & Amy Give Back!
Comedian Tig Naturo is currently on tour and made a stop in Rochester at the Kodak Center in August! The opener, Speed Painter Amy Burkman of Good Art Project, partners with Tig to auction off a painting at every performance to the highest donor with the proceeds going to a local charity of the city they are performing in.
For their Rochester stop, they chose to benefit C.U.R.E. and generated $5,040 in donations! They chose C.U.R.E. as our mission was dear to their hearts of both being cancer survivors.
Thank you Tig and Amy for choosing C.U.R.E. and sharing your talents and kind hearts, making a difference in every city you visit!
Cheesy GOODness!
A huge thank you to CRISP Rochester for joining our Liquid Gold for C.U.R.E. Mac & Cheese Challenge for the very first time — and what a debut! By selling a ton of their delicious Pork Belly Mac & Cheese and donating $1 from every order to C.U.R.E., they helped raise an incredible $1,000 for the Families we serve!
We are so grateful to the CRISP Rochester team and everyone who ordered a bowl (or two!) to support this delicious initiative. Your enthusiasm and generosity turned a community favorite into something even more meaningful, helping C.U.R.E. continue embracing Families at every turn.
Thank you for bringing the flavor, showing up for our Families, and making your first year part of Liquid Gold for C.U.R.E. one to remember!
Sipping for a Cause!
A heartfelt thank you to Untamed Nutrition for standing alongside C.U.R.E. year after year! Throughout September, they raised awareness for childhood cancer and sickle cell disease with their special Sickle Cell and Childhood Cancer Crusher raspberry and pineapple tea, donating $1 from every purchase to C.U.R.E. They also sold paper donation ribbons at their location, giving customers another meaningful way to show their support.
Together, these efforts raised an incredible $900 for C.U.R.E. and the Families we serve!
We are truly grateful for Untamed Nutrition’s continued generosity and for choosing to make our mission part of their business year after year. Their commitment reminds our Families that they have a community standing beside them.
Revving Up Awareness!
A huge thank you to Thor Promotions for supporting C.U.R.E. throughout the year! From Hamlin Wheelfest and the Father’s Day Car Show in June to the Walker Fire Department Fall Fest & Car Show in September, these events brought our community together for a cause that matters.
Together, these shows raised an incredible $2,000 for C.U.R.E. and the Families we serve! Even more special, C.U.R.E. kids had the opportunity to help present some of the awards, making them part of the excitement and celebration.
We are so grateful to Thor Promotions and Marty who organizes these events. Thank you for putting the fun in fundraising and helping drive awareness for childhood cancer in our community!
Please give a hand to our Advocates of the Month…
Cat Kwiecien
& Lois Rau!
We are honored to recognize Cat and Lois as our Advocates of the Month and to express our heartfelt gratitude for the extraordinary dedication they have shown to our organization. While the gala may be one special evening, the work that goes into making it successful happens throughout the entire year.
Cat's dedication to our gala is truly remarkable. Throughout the year, she tirelessly reaches out to businesses and builds relationships to secure donations for our silent auction. Her persistence and commitment help make the auction a success, which in turn helps our organization continue providing the programs, services, and support that make a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.
Behind Cat are her wonderful family and friends, who are always willing to lend a hand and support her efforts. Their time and willingness to help are a beautiful reminder that it truly takes a community to make a difference. We are grateful not only for everything Cat does, but also for the people who stand beside her and help bring her efforts to fruition.
Lois brought an entirely different kind of magic to our gala. With her incredible creativity and eye for detail, she helped transform an ordinary room into something truly extraordinary. Her beautiful decorations and stunning flower arrangements made the room sparkle!
Lois ensured that the other members of our dedicated decorating committee were able to seamlessly bring the the room to life. We are incredibly thankful for every member of this team and for the care they put into making the evening special.
Their work may happen behind the scenes, but the impact is felt far beyond the gala. They remind us that advocacy isn't just about speaking up for a cause; it is about showing up, giving your time, sharing your talents, building relationships, and doing whatever you can to make a difference.
Cat and Lois, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you for believing in our mission, for believing in the people we serve, and for giving so much of yourselves to help our organization succeed.
We are incredibly fortunate to have all of you in our corner. Your generosity, dedication, and love for our mission make a lasting impact — not only on the success of our gala, but on the lives of the people we are here to serve.
Garden Volunteers
We are looking for helpers who can lovingly tend to our Children’s Memorial Garden. Our new space at 103 White Spruce Boulevard has a LOT of garden space that needs some attention. This space is dedicated to our Angels and we want it to be peaceful and beautiful throughout the summer and fall. Your help is so appreciated!
