September 2022 Newsletter

C.U.R.E. is here.

From the day of diagnosis, throughout treatment and beyond:
The support doesn’t stop when the treatment stops.

And we are so thankful for our Friends who make our support possible.

September is Awareness Month!

Did you know we have an ENTIRE page dedicated to Awareness Month? It will list all of the Proclamations, businesses going gold, Liquid Gold Challenge participants, ways to raise awareness and MORE!

Spotlight on: Kennedy

Meet our friend, Kennedy.

Kennedy is a beautiful, smart, and sassy little 2 year old girl. She has a family she is crazy about and loves to give hugs and kisses. Kennedy was diagnosed with a large Neuroblastoma that is invading her stomach and dangerously close to her spine. She is currently undergoing treatment with the hope her tumor shrinks and can eventually have it surgically removed.

Her strength, positive attitude and tenacity could make anyone smile and feel inspired!

Sending love and congratulations to Maya and Ari who, along with their Families, came and rang the End of Chemo Bell in our office recently. Maya rang the End of Chemo Bell on August 8th. Ari rang the End of Chemo Bell on August 24th. They both added their Handprints on the “Handprints of Hope” wall we have here at the office and we treated them to some of their favorites: Cheetos and Chocolate Chip Cookies!

Virtual Meeting with the FDA

Board Member and Childhood Cancer Survivor, Jacob Adams, will be a panelist in this discussion!

September 15, 2022 from 10 AM - 3 PM

Resources:

Childhood Cancer Survivor Scholarship and Employment Resources:

Children's Cancer Cause is assisting childhood cancer patients, survivors and families by centralizing most national resources that provide scholarships for survivors of childhood cancer or those with particular effects. The site also has resources and advice relating to employment and applying for these scholarships.

Some opportunities require commitment to a childhood cancer advocacy project while in college, while others make you eligible for you just being you.  But you do need to apply! Be sure to read the instructions and qualifications very carefully. Apply in plenty of time to get feedback from family, guidance counselors and others. Board Member, Jacob Adams, would be happy to help if given at least two weeks’ notice. Please contact the office for his e-mail address.

Catching Dreams

Catching Dreams Charters, Inc. hosts private fishing charters near Buffalo on Lake Erie or the Niagara River for pediatric oncology or hematology children.

We have connected with Captain Ned, the Founder of this organization, and would love to connect our C.U.R.E. Kids to Ned and schedule some fishing charters! Charters are scheduled for during the week from mid-May through Labor Day and leave from the Buffalo Harbor or near the Niagara River.

Please reach out to Carol Austin if you are interested in a private fishing charter.

Any Teens with Sickle Cell Interested…

Dr. Noronha is trying to gauge interest from local teens with Sickle Cell Disease around having Zoom Meet Ups this summer. If you (or your child) is 13 years old - 17 years old and interested, please contact Dr. Noronha.

Donate Blood or Platelets!

Many of our children depend on blood transfusions and blood products in the course of their treatment. Our children are in need of blood products and you can help! Please consider donating blood if you are well enough to.

GRYT Health connects patients and caregivers to others with shared experience and to information relevant to their journey.

Through the GRYT app, we’ve created a platform for people affected by cancer to connect to others with similar experiences, and to tailored information that helps our users become more aware of options specific to their needs or diagnosis – empowering them to make choices that are right for them.

Our community of patients, survivors, medical professionals, researchers and advocates across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 100 countries worldwide have participated in almost 1,000,000 interactions to date, inspiring people to live according to their own standards.

Trust from our community is paramount to our success and something we take very seriously. We never share any of our users’ information without their explicit permission. Unlike other apps, GRYT is the first social community that is funded, built, and run by patients and caregivers where users communicate anonymously in real-time and each person is 100% in charge of what happens with their data.

CURE Bears for Hope and Love & Friends…

Thank you so much to CURE Bears for Hope and Love & Friends for your kindness in donating backpacks and school supplies for our C.U.R.E. kids and their siblings. We appreciate all that you do for us!

Creative Themes Day Camp & Catching Dreams…

Thank you Creative Themes Day Camp and Catching Dreams for a wonderful afternoon of fishing, kayaking, juggling, arts and crafts and so much more! What a wonderful day for our C.U.R.E. families. There were smiles everywhere! Each child also left with a new fishing pole and tackle box, compliments of our Friend Captain Ned!

Mac Daddy Award Winners:

A huge thank you to our Friends from The Gate House Cafe. They were our Liquid Gold for C.U.R.E. Challenge winners for 2019 and 2021. They were unable to participate in the Challenge this year, but made a very generous donation to our organization in support of our mission. We are truly humbled by their support and appreciate their willingness to let someone else try for the 2022 Title of “Mac Daddy”.

Thank you, Sasha!

We are so grateful for our Friend Sasha. While visiting with his grandparents this past month, they made a point of stopping by the office so he could donate money from his piggy bank. He said he wanted to help sick kids. Well Sasha, you not only helped sick kids but melted our hearts. We are so grateful for your kindness and thoughtfulness. Thank you for keeping our children in your heart.

You shine bright, RDI!

A tremendous THANK YOU for continuing to be so kind to our Families. Your belief in our mission drives us to continue providing meaningful support to our Families. Thank you for believing in us and the work we do!

Hang Tight, Friends!

We WILL be recruiting volunteers to help us at the Recipe for a C.U.R.E. Sunday Brunch for during the event and to help in the office afterwards (!!!), but not quite yet. Keep your eyes peeled for an email about that!

Don’t get our emails? Check your Spam/Junk folder (we had an issue with our emails where our beautifully crafted masterpieces were MISTAKENLY identified as junk mail by some servers). Be sure to sign up for our emails if you don’t receive them!

Please consider honoring our Little Angels through tending to our Julie Roberts Children’s Memorial Garden. Named in memory of Julie Roberts, our garden memorializes our Friends we have lost too soon. A brick walkway in front of our building is adorned with the names of our angels.

Tending to the garden includes weeding, pruning and watering. Sign up for a week below. You can come any day or time during that week.

Liquid Gold for C.U.R.E. is back!

We are so excited to Get Cheesey again this year to raise awareness of childhood cancer! Please check out these incredible restaurants during September and order their mac and cheese. Some have created custom dishes while others are donating based on the number of times their tried and true classic is ordered. Since mac and cheese is gold in color and SUPER kid-friendly, we thought it the BEST way to help raise awareness and support local establishments.

Please be sure to post a photo on social media if you check out the mac and cheese. Tag C.U.R.E. and use #cureawareness2022 and encourage all your friends to get cheesey with us for the kids!

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month T-Shirts!

We have partnered with Bonfire for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month! The back is customizable: add your Pediatric Cancer Warrior’s name! Campaigns can start ASAP and your crew can order your gear now to have in hand in September. Campaigns will end by 9/15/2022. A portion of the sale from each shirt will be donated to C.U.R.E. to further our mission of supporting local families facing BIG battles!

Baskets Wanted!

We are still in need of some great Auction baskets. Some ideas include spirit-related baskets (think margaritas, bloody marys, moscow mules and more). We also could use some date night baskets, too! We have SO many kid-related baskets that are sure to excite you! We have received quite a few pet themed baskets at this point, so we should be good there. Supporting local establishments is HUGE! If you are assembling a basket, we humbly ask you to support the incredible businesses who continue to give back to our community and make it so great.
