June 2026 Newsletter
C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association is celebrating 50 years of impact, hope, and walking alongside Families during their most difficult times. As we honor the legacy built by our Founders, Supporters & Families, we’re also preparing for an exciting future. While we take pride in how far we’ve come, we’re even more energized by what’s ahead. Big, exciting things are on the horizon—the next chapter of C.U.R.E. is just the beginning.
Happy 3 year Anniversary, Sammi Jo!
It’s a love story, baby, and we just say YES to having Sammi Jo on our team! 🎶 Today, we are celebrating a magical milestone: three incredible years of Sammi Jo bringing her passion, energy, and sparkle to C.U.R.E. ✨
As our event planning mastermind, Sammi Jo creates absolute magic out of thin air. She doesn't just plan and execute our fundraising events; she sprinkles them with pixie dust and turns them into unforgettable experiences for our community. Walt Disney once said, "It's kind of fun to do the impossible," and watching Sammi Jo pull off flawless events year after year proves she takes that to heart! 🏰✨
She has a unique superpower for connecting with people, sharing our mission, and making everyone feel like they are part of something truly wondrous.
Sammi Jo, you make our whole place shimmer. ✨ Thank you for three years of tireless dedication, endless creativity, and for always reminding us that “all it takes is faith, trust, and a little pixie dust” (plus a really good event spreadsheet!).
We are so lucky to have you in our story. Here’s to many more chapters of making magic together! 💛
We are so grateful for our Volunteers & Advocates!
Behind every milestone we achieve and every life we touch is a community of tireless volunteers who pour their hearts into our mission. You are the hands that do the heavy lifting, the voices that carry our message, and the heartbeat of everything we do. Without your unwavering dedication and selfless generosity, the vital work of C.U.R.E. simply would not be possible. Thank you for stepping up, showing up, and proving that together, we can make a difference.
Outstanding Strong Partner
There are people who do their jobs well, and then there are people who truly change the experience for families walking through incredibly difficult moments.
This is one of those people. At a time when life feels stressful and you are unsure of how your child is going to respond to so many changes, you quickly realize what incredible support you have.
His calm spirit, gentle voice, and incredible patience have a way of making children feel safe, even during procedures that can feel scary and overwhelming. He’s the person kids look for — the one showing up with a fun toy, a distraction, a smile, or simply a comforting presence when they need it most.
But what makes him even more special is that his compassion doesn’t end when his shift does. He gives his own time to volunteer with C.U.R.E., always willing to step in wherever help is needed. He gives our families a familiar face, a sense of comfort, and genuine empathy in every interaction.
We are so grateful for the heart he brings to this work and the difference he makes in the lives of so many children and families every single day.
We are honored to present the Outstanding Strong Partner Award to Colin McKean- the Child Life Specialist in the outpatient clinic at Golisano Children’s Hospital. Thank you for all that you do.
C.U.R.E. Committed Champion: Swan Market & the Fischer Family
We would like to recognize a family and business that reminds us what true generosity looks like—not in grand gestures meant for attention, but in quiet, meaningful acts that bring people together.
When we think about what makes an event successful, we often picture the decorations, the schedule, or the turnout. But the heart of any gathering is the people who give their time and energy to make it happen. And that’s exactly what this family and their business have done.
They gave their time when it would have been easier to stay home. They showed up, cooked and donated an amazing lunch for our bereaved families at our very first annual bereaved family picnic. That meal was a vehicle that helped foster comfort, connection, and community.
They also donated their amazing sausage at our annual Remembrance Service that was held this past November for our bereaved families.
In addition to all of that, they organized a “round up for C.U.R.E.” fundraiser at the cash register in their store providing monetary support that we have in turn been able to use to provide for our families.
It is our honor to recognize Barry, Liz and Eric Fischer of Swan Market with the C.U.R.E. Committed Champion award.
C.U.R.E. Rookie of the Year: Sam Meloni
As many of you know, our recent move to the new building was a monumental task. It was stressful, chaotic, and required an immense amount of heavy lifting—both literally and figuratively. Right out of the gate, this individual became absolutely instrumental to that transition.
Whenever a problem arose, he was there with his handy skillset, a toolbelt, and a solution. He has physically moved countless boxes and pieces of furniture, he coordinates tasks to keep us on track, and on any given week, you can find him outside, generously mowing the lawn to make sure our new home looks beautiful.
But what truly sets him apart isn't just the physical labor. It’s his foresight. He is always three steps ahead, anticipating our needs and thinking of things we haven’t even realized we needed yet. Underneath all that tireless hard work is a deeply caring and compassionate soul who has shown, through every single action, just how much he truly cares for our organization and the Families we serve.
This individual has been a true supporter of the mission of C.U.R.E. He recognizes the love and dedication our Team pours into everything we do. He makes an effort to get to know the Team, support them and be available to them. Everyone is busy, and we understand that, but this volunteer makes every effort possible to attend our events – not just the fun ones. He comes to the events that honor our angels and assists with set up and clean up. We find that clean up at events can be a challenge to have extra hands with, as everyone is tired from set up and facilitating the event. He has made the extra effort to fill these gaps in and be helpful where we may be in need. Gaining an understanding of the true spirit behind our organization, the mission of what we do every day, is essential to understand the drive behind the C.U.R.E. Team. He gets it. And that means the world to all of us.
We would quite literally still be unpacking boxes without him. Whether it’s oven mitts he’s wearing through offering his food and beverage experience or a catcher’s mitt to catch the laundry list of tasks we’ve thrown at him, we are grateful he’s been so available to all of us.
Outstanding Community Partner: Rob Damico and R.P. Damico & Associates
One of the core values we hold dear at C.U.R.E. is humility. It’s the idea that the work comes first, and the applause comes second. The person we would like to recognize tonight is the living, breathing definition of that value. For nearly ten years, this person has been a tireless advocate for our mission. This person doesn't shout about his contributions from the rooftops, and has never looked for a pat on the back. This person simply shows up, rolls up his sleeves, and gives.
When we look back at our fundraising events over the years, our Outstanding Community Partner for 2026 hasn’t just been a casual participant; he has been a whole-year supporter, year after year. Whether we are in the middle of event season or in the quiet months in between, this person’s commitment to our stability and our growth never wavers.
But his advocacy goes so much deeper than financial or event support. This person is a champion of our message. Whenever the moment is right, he thoughtfully shares the mission of C.U.R.E. with his professional and personal networks. He doesn't just ask people to support us; he helps them understand why we matter. Because of his genuine voice, he has garnered vital new support for the work we do, opening doors that we couldn't have opened without him.
Perhaps most meaningful of all, though, is where else Rob shares this mission. He has brought C.U.R.E. home. He has shared our purpose, our heart, and our work with his children and his family. To pass down the values of compassion, community support, and advocacy to the next generation is a profound gift. It means the world to us that this family walks alongside the C.U.R.E. family.
To our 2026 Outstanding Community Partner, you have spent nearly ten years being quiet about how much you contribute, but tonight, we are going to be loud for you. Thank you for your tireless dedication, your unwavering humility, and your deep, compassionate heart.
C.U.R.E. MVP: Mike Broker
This person’s journey with us started with a literal spark. Many of you may know him through the Roc Holiday Light Show, where he used his creativity to shine a massive, brilliant light on the reality of childhood cancer (and raise a LOT of money to help support the Families we provide assistance and love to). But he didn’t just want to raise awareness from a distance; he wanted to be in the heart of the mission.
When he joined our Board of Directors, he brought more than just strategic thinking. He brought a "whatever it takes" attitude.
He is our muscle: Whether it’s moving furniture, loading up trucks for events, or being the first person on a cleanup crew, he never considers a task "beneath" his role. He’s also wildly talented and handy – installing custom butcher block countertops to SEVERAL offices in our new space after he did the demo work himself.
He is our voice: He has become a tireless advocate for our families, ensuring their stories are heard and their needs are met. In addition to dedicating himself to advocate for our families, he has shown up for our team, too. This individual has shown a genuine interest to learn more about the roles our team plays and to be involved however he can. He’s worked to gain a true understanding of the heartbeat of C.U.R.E. and the work we do.
He is our heart: Perhaps most importantly, he has made a profound effort to truly understand the "why" behind our work. He doesn’t just see the logistics; he sees the families, the struggles, and the hope we provide. This individual makes it a priority to show up for events and participate – not just the fun, celebratory ones, but the difficult ones. This also is beyond meaningful to the team at C.U.R.E. Board member presence is so good for our families, but I think even more so for employees. It shows a level of caring about what are doing.
"It’s one thing to support a cause; it’s another thing entirely to let that cause change you."
It’s apparent to everyone who works with him that this individual believes in this mission down to his core. He has been truly touched by his engagement with our organization, and in return, he has touched the lives of countless families in our community.
Thank you, Brian & Mike!
Brian Wainwright first learned about C.U.R.E. through our Young Professionals group, which was led by fellow Bonaventure Graduate, Brittany (Charles) Gold. He has dedicated his accounting and compliance expertise to C.U.R.E. for two full terms (6 years!) and has been a member of the Executive Board for several years. We are so grateful for his attention to detail and dedication to being fully engaged with C.U.R.E. He has been a wonderful volunteer at several events, even coordinating the Tacky Sweater Event the last several years. Please join us in thanking Brian for his time, efforts and talents all these years!
Mike Broker has been deeply committed to C.U.R.E. for many years, which began with his kindness in donating a portion of the proceeds from the Roc Holiday Light Show to our organization for several years. His commitment continued to shine (see what we did there? :) ) as his involvement on our Board of Directors during a truly pivotal time in our history - the purchase of 103 White Spruce Boulevard. Mike quietly supported the organization through rolling up his sleeves and doing physical work at the new space. You know those beautiful butcher block counters we have in the new space? Yep. That was him! Mike also has shown up for our Team, even during the difficult events. He understands the balance of celebrating the Survivors and honoring the Angels. Mike, thank you for all you’ve done for C.U.R.E. We are beyond grateful.

Spotlight on: Addi
Meet our Friend, Addi!
Addi is a 14 year old with the kindest heart. She was diagnosed in January 2025 with B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Even during grueling treatments, her beautiful spirit brings happiness wherever she goes. She loves music and being around the people she cares about most. Her joy for life is something special, and it naturally lifts the hearts of everyone around her.
Congratulations, Eli, Joseph & Victoria!
We were BEYOND excited to welcome Eli and his Family to our new space at 103 White Spruce Boulevard to be the VERY FIRST C.U.R.E. Kid to ring our End of Chemo Bell! Within our new office space, we have a room dedicated solely to celebrating our Friends as they finish Chemo or Radiation. The C.U.R.E. Team was thrilled to provide Eli’s favorite: Chinese Food! While Eli enjoyed Pokemon themed items, his sister was invited to select a toy for herself because C.U.R.E. recognizes the sacrifices made by the brave siblings of our C.U.R.E. Children. She selected a doll, which she named Chloe. We think they’ll have lots of fun adventures together!
Our Team was ecstatic to celebrate our Friend Joseph finishing treatment! Joseph, his parents and several other Family Members were able to join us to celebrate. We added Joseph’s handprint to our Handprints of Hope wall. He had a little help from Mom ringing the bell. His Family then sat down to a yummy meal of Chipotle. We were thrilled to gift Joseph some learning toys and a whale bubble machine!
The C.U.R.E. Team took a trip down the Yellow Brick Road to celebrate Victoria. “Ding Dong, the cancer’s gone!” Victoria and her Family joined us at the office in full Wizard of Oz theming to celebrate her end of chemo. With courage and brains by her side, she rang the End of Chemo Bell. Her brother Braven picked out a cool marble run activity and Victoria is now the proud mama of a baby doll and stroller. Victoria’s Family enjoyed a delicious meal from Olive Garden to celebrate. We were so happy to take the trip to Oz to celebrate such a special moment with Victoria and her Family.
“R” is for Research
Did you know the “R” in “C.U.R.E.” represents “Research”? While helping Families now, during their fight, and beyond remains a core mission at C.U.R.E., we also respect and value the research being done at Golisano Children’s Hospital. Did you know the early Founders of C.U.R.E. presented one of the first (if not THE first) microscope to Strong Memorial Hospital? The Fellows are such a vital piece of the puzzle, especially in the Pediatric Oncology Hematology Department. C.U.R.E. is honored to have presented the team with a $5,000 check to be used by the Fellowship Research Program in the Peds Heme/Onc Department to help further their work.
Hey, C.U.R.E. Parents:
Did you know we have a private Facebook Group JUST for you? Connect with other parents. Ask questions about treatment, education help and more. Learn from others.

May MOMS’ Night Out
Our Spa-tacular for Moms was so fun in May! We hosted C.U.R.E. Moms at our office for a night of relaxing, recharging and connecting! We started with a gentle yoga and continued the night with pampering. The moms put together flower bouquets from our flower bar, decorated journals, enjoyed light bites, connected with other moms and had chair massages. It is truly our honor to pamper and recognize moms who endure so much during their child’s diagnosis and treatment. Thanks to all who came!
June (almost) DADS’ Day Out
We also enjoy celebrating the Dads! We hosted a Dads’ Day Out Fishing Charter with Harrington Outfitters and Catching Dreams Charters. We had a handful of Dads take advantage of this opportunity and enjoy a day on the water together - connecting but also reeling in some fish! A huge thank you to our partners who made this possible!
Survivors’ Day Save the Date
Mark your calendars and save the date for Sunday, June 7th, for C.U.R.E.’s Annual Survivors’ Day Picnic
Coffee & Connections!
The fourth Tuesday of the month, we are hosting Grandparent Coffee Hour here at the C.U.R.E. Office. Grandparents are so heavily involved in the lives of their grandchildren. The weight of helping their child through a diagnosis and their grandchild through treatment can be heavy. We want to connect you to one another - to lean on one another - and build your village of support. We hope C.U.R.E. Grandparents will join us monthly and build connections! Let us pour into you like you pour into others!
Wilmot Cancer Center’s Cancer Survivors’ Night
C.U.R.E. is again offering C.U.R.E. Families (past and present) tickets to the Wilmot Cancer Center’s Cancer Survivors’ Night with the Rochester Red Wings. The game is taking place on Friday, July 31st! These tickets are available to immediate household members of C.U.R.E. Kids. Please reach out to Carol for more info (carol.austin@curekidscancer.com)
Catching Dreams & fish, too!
If any C.U.R.E. Families are interested in a morning of guided fishing, please reach out to Captain Ned at nlibrock@roadrunner.com for any dates and times for the upcoming summer and fall of 2026.
Catching Dreams Charters, Inc. a 501c3 not for profit, provides fishing adventures for children and young adults battling cancer! We create meaningful moments and memories on the waters of Western New York by “turning wishing into fishing”!
Free fishing charters are provided to patients and families. A “Dream Team” of certified Coast Guard Captains and guides offer the highest level of professionalism, safety, and ability.

The Vertex Foundation Scholarship for SCD & TDT helps people with sickle cell disease (SCD) or transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia (TDT) and their immediate families (spouses, siblings, caregivers and children) pursue two-year, three-year, four-year or graduate degrees by offsetting some of the cost of attending college or graduate school.
CANDICE’S SICKLE CELL FUND SCHOLARSHIP
Candice’s Sickle Cell Anemia Fund, Inc., is a powerful initiative founded by Candice Young-Deler, who has courageously overcome the challenges of living with Sickle Cell Disease. Inspired by her own academic journey, Candice created this scholarship to support students living with Sickle Cell who are pursuing higher education.
Each year, the fund awards $1,500 scholarships to three deserving individuals, helping ease the financial burden and recognize their resilience and determination. These scholarships not only provide financial support but also affirm the strength and potential of students facing chronic health challenges.
💡 Why It Matters:
Students with Sickle Cell often face painful health episodes that disrupt their education. This fund helps ensure that their dreams of college and career success remain within reach.

We are hooked on the Churchville-Chili Girls Lacrosse Team’s Kindness!
We are incredibly grateful to the Churchville-Chili Girls Lacrosse team for their recent, heartwarming initiative. The team stepped up in a major way by hosting a donation drive to collect items for our C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association gift baskets!
It is truly inspiring to see young athletes use their platform and energy to give back to their community. Thanks to their hard work and the generosity of everyone who contributed, we have received a wonderful assortment of items that will help bring smiles and comfort to the children and families we serve.
A huge thank you to the players, coaches, and everyone at Churchville-Chili who made this drive a success. Your commitment to service is making a tangible difference, and we are so proud to have your support.
These Girls have Heart!
We are so moved by the kindness and creativity of Girl Scout Troop #64230. Their recent project to handcraft heart-shaped pillows for our kids has touched us all, and we want to extend a huge thank you for the love they poured into every knot tied.
These aren't just pillows; they are symbols of support and comfort. For a child undergoing treatment or recovery, having something soft, cozy, and made with care can provide a much-needed sense of comfort during their hospital stays and beyond. It is truly heartening to see young leaders in our community using their talents to bring joy to those who need it most.
The compassion demonstrated by the scouts of Troop #64230 embodies the very best of community spirit.
To the girls, the troop leaders, and the families who supported this effort: Thank you for your time, your hard work, and your big hearts. You have made a tangible, comforting difference in the lives of our C.U.R.E. Families, and we are so grateful to have you as part of our mission. We know our Kids will cherish these thoughtful gifts!
A Meaty Thank You to the Arkport National Honor Society!
We are sending a massive shout-out to the Arkport National Honor Society for their recent, creative efforts in support of C.U.R.E.
The students really went the extra mile by organizing a meat stick fundraiser to raise critical funds for our Families. It is always so rewarding to see students use their initiative, leadership, and, of course, their appetite for service to make a real impact in the lives of children fighting cancer.
Every dollar raised through this unique project helps us continue providing the essential programs, financial assistance, and emotional support that our C.U.R.E. Families rely on.
To the members of the Arkport NHS: Your commitment to giving back to your community does not go unnoticed. You have truly "raised the bar" (and the stakes!) with your dedication.
Nora’s Kindness Shines Brightly
We are incredibly moved by Nora’s heartwarming decision to use her birthday as an opportunity to support C.U.R.E. By organizing a birthday cash raffle, she has turned her special celebration into a powerful source of hope and comfort for the Families we serve. We want to extend our sincerest gratitude to Nora for her thoughtful initiative and the significant impact she has made on our mission. Her kindness has provided a wonderful gift to children navigating their own difficult journeys, and we are so proud to have her support. Thank you, Nora, for choosing to share your joy and for making such a meaningful difference!
Nora said: “My Mother always taught me that no one ever really dies until the last time someone says your name. Evan Valentine meant a lot to my brother, and my family is close, so when my brother when to college I told him I’d make him proud. The first time I really understood what community meant is when the Holley community rallied around Evan and his family. So, for all those reasons and more, I wanted to honor Evan’s memory and all that C.U.R.E. does, both seen and unseen.”

Grateful Giving
Grateful Giving is a platform and mobile app that connects individual donors and businesses with nonprofits that need support to carry out their mission.
When you sign up, Grateful Giving allows individuals to automatically donate a portion of their spending to selected charities. It operates through a software platform that connects users with over 1.5 million non-profits, transforming everyday purchases into automated micro-donations to support causes. For individuals, this involves connecting a bank account or credit card to the service, which then sends a small percentage of daily spending to a chosen charity. For businesses, it can be used to give back to customers' favored causes or to make automatic donations for purchases, referrals, and birthdays, with the business paying for the donation as a thank you.
For individuals
Connect your accounts: Link your bank account or credit card to the Grateful Giving platform.
Set up giving: Choose to automatically donate a small percentage of your daily spending to a charity you care about.
Select a charity: Choose from a database of over 1.5 million 501(c)(3) charities.
For businesses
Partner with Grateful Giving:
The business pays a subscription fee to use the platform.
Automate donations:
The platform makes automatic micro-donations on behalf of the business for customer purchases, referrals, or employee/customer birthdays.
Pay for the donation:
The business pays for the donation as a way to thank customers or employees and support social good.
Enhance customer loyalty:

How it helps

To transfer funds from your IRA to C.U.R.E., please follow these step-by-step instructions:
(1) Contact your financial advisor or representative at the financial institution that holds your IRA.
(2) Tell your representative that you wish to make a QCD from your IRA to C.U.R.E.

Transfers to donor-advised funds, supporting organizations, private foundations, charitable remainder trusts, and charitable gift annuities do not qualify. The transfer is tax-free and is not included in your adjusted gross income (AGI), thus there is no charitable deduction. A transfer is not subject to AGI limitations on charitable deductions. C.U.R.E. recommends you consult with your estate attorney and/or financial advisor prior to requesting a QCD to C.U.R.E.
